Somehow most of the crew manages to launch escape boats before the ship sinks, but some men are forced to leap overboard and are lost to the ice. This occurs somewhere in the Weddell Sea. Tragically, the Endurance crashes into some ice and takes on water. A voyage of this magnitude and consequence has never been attempted before. A previous attempt to find the Endurance three years ago ended in failure. The $10m mission was financed by an anonymous donor.

The site of Endurance was declared a historic monument under the terms of the 1959 Antarctic Treaty.Īn expedition team of 64 people, plus a crew of 46, were on board the expedition ship, the SA Agulhas II. It was surveyed using the latest tools and its position confirmed. He added: “Nothing was touched on the wreck. We were able to film the wreck in super-high definition. The Antarctic seabed does not have any wood-eating micro-organisms, the water has the clarity of distilled water. He tweeted: “The wreck is coherent, in an astonishing state of preservation.
